Dog fouling nuisance – Ramsey Road, Laxey.

Residents of Ard Reayrt and Ramsey Road have contacted the Commissioners concerned about the amount of dog fouling on the pavements and public areas. As ever it’s probably one or two irresponsible owners who are failing to pick up. If you do see anyone who behaves in this way please let us know on 861241 as we’d very much like engage in discussion with them. Temporary signage has been deployed in the area in the interim. Dog bye-laws are due for re-drafting in the spring – watch out for the consultation coming soon.

Life and Achievements of Stuart Slack to be remembered in Laxey

A memorial bench to the first Manxman to win a medal at the Commonwealth Games is to be installed in Laxey. The bench has been funded by the Fellowship of the Manx Veteran Cyclists and will be installed in the Mines Road area in the coming weeks.

Garff Commissioners are extremely honoured by the request from the family that the bench be installed in Laxey, as Stuart contributed to Manx life in sport, music and many, many other ways.

Stuart won a Bronze medal in the Cycling Road Race at the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, but also penned the song “The Laxey Wheel” and in future, those who pause for a few moments at the bench will be able to think on Stuart’s achievements and glance up to check that that wheel is still, “turning, turning, turning”, as he predicted it would; a fitting confirmation for us all that life goes on.

The report on his Commonwealth Games performance suggests that Stuart had the gritty, feisty Manx spirit when it came to racing and competition…

“…his amazing finishing spurt after a gruelling race run in terrible weather, heavy rain and a high wind, had his team mates and officials in a frenzy of excitement as he burst through to achieve what seemed the impossible.”
Isle of Man Weekly Times, 28 July 1958

“Stuart Slack was a local boy, a local hero, his victory did so much to encourage cycling over here. Within a few years of his victory the Onchan Stadium opened with a cycle track around the outside and cycling on the Isle of Man has gone from strength to strength ever since.”
Brian Whitehead, Commonwealth Games Athlete.

Garff Political Surgeries!

Business at the Political Surgeries held by Martyn and Daphne has been busy and brisk over the past months. The Surgeries take place on the first Saturday of each month commencing at 10.00 am.

At the next Surgery on Saturday 4th February, Daphne and Martyn will be joined by Garff Commissioner, Tim Kenyon. The presence of a Commissioner will allow additional direct consultation on issues relating to local government and will complement the success of the Surgeries initiated by our MHK’s.

A Garff Commissioner will be in attendance at subsequent surgeries.

Play Equipment for Young People in Lonan? Yes? No? Your views needed.

The Commissioners thank all those who came in on Monday last (23rd January) to view initial ideas for children’s play equipment in two areas in the Church Road area of Lonan.

The views expressed were wide ranging, but always presented positively and constructively – so thank you to all. A report will be presented to the Commissioners in February outlining all the views expressed.

If you wish to view the ideas and wish to submit comment please contact us on 861241, via email garff@manx.net or Facebook/Twitter.

Government Bathing Water Charts 2016

The Government’s Bathing Water Charts indicate a mixed bag for Garff’s beaches – but the future is brighter!

Maughold’s beaches have benefited in recent years from new sewerage treatment facilities at Port Lewaigue, Maughold Village, Booilushag, Corony and Glen Mona; the success of these initiatives was the result of a close partnership between the Commissioners and Manx Utilities.

The close partnership continues and the focus has now turned to beaches further south, and the Commissioners are very pleased with the very positive response from Manx Utilities in regard to providing sewerage treatment in Laxey Bay and Garwick Bay. It’s the early stages of a long process of investigation and planning, but the ball has begun to roll with our two MHK’s Daphne Caine and Martyn Perkins giving full support in Tynwald.

The water quality along the  SSSI designated Maughold coastline will experience further improvements when the new sewage outfall at the Mooragh in Ramsey is commissioned later this year.

The Commissioners hope to make further announcements during 2017 as Manx Utilities make further investigations to progress the initiative.
