The weather forecast is dry and maybe sunny – a good omen for the next five years?

Please note that due to the closure of the A18 Mountain Road the A2 Coast Road will be more busy than usual – please take extra care as you attend your polling station.

A Brief History of Garff!

The boundaries of Garff Sheading have ebbed and flowed for centuries: the original Sheading comprised Maughold (inc. South Ramsey), Lonan (inc. Laxey), and Onchan.
In 1796 an Act of Tynwald transferred Onchan to Middle Sheading and in 2013 a further Act of Tynwald returned part of the Howstrake area to the GarGarff Sheadingff Tynwald constituency (Click on the image on the ‘Manx Parishes’ link for more information).

The Local Authority boundaries have remained intact apart from the recent internal amalgamation of Laxey, Lonan and Maughold; the Garff Commissioners’ local authority boundary now forms the largest local authority in terms of geographical area as well as having one of the largest populations.

Interestingly, the division of the Island into two sectors post Godred Crovan’s time designated Maughold as in the south (see section highlighted in yellow in the image) as it fell below the mountain ridge line that culminates in North Barrule. From then on the parish was firmly embedded into Garff Sheading.

Tynwald Election: Garff Requisition Meetings

The first of the requisition Meetings gets underway at 7.00 am at the Dhoon Church Hall in Maughold. Word is that all the candidates are in attendance so sharpen your questions up now and get along!
In the event of high attendance the meeting may take place in the adjoining church itself.
Hot on its heels there follows a meeting in Onchan on Friday 9th September, at 7.30pm. This takes place at Elim Family Centre, Second Avenue, Onchan.
A third meeting takes place in Lonan/Laxey on the 16th of September at the Working Mens’ Institute.

Glen Mona Hotel Update

The extensive refurbishment of the Glen Mona Hotel is progressing extremely well and it is hoped the venue will be opening this autumn.
The aim of theGlen Mona new owners is to provide a centre for the community as well as a welcoming destination for visitors and tourists from further afield.
The Commissioners welcome the initiative and look forward to the creation of a thriving facility in the Parish.
Any one able to date this image of the Glen Mona from past years?
